The best suggestion anyone has made so so far is to change the type of media you are using, and mybe you should also check the burning speed. Burn slower and see what happens.

You also didn’t menstion what software you were using to do the conversion.

I would also reccommend Nero Vision Express to beginner for re-encoding AVI to DVD. it is relativly simple and ussually error free. It is however an entry level solution.

Permit me to tell you what method has givin me the best success.
1. I only use verbatim media as i know it is 100% compatible with my DVD writer and player.

2. the actual re-encoding for me is a 3 step process
2a. Video transcoding: I use Tmpegenc to recode the video stream to m2v which is DVD video format. I set the options according to the aspect ratio of the video and i know the correct bitrate to use to fit about 250 min’s of video onto a 4.37 GB disk (it’s 2000kbits/s if you use a Dolby stereo for sound). I set motion precison to HIGHEST QUALITY and VIDEO ARRANGE METHOD to FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO). It takes 2 h40 min’s to recode 42 minutes of video to m2v. (goto downloads and ook for tmpegenc)

2b. Tmpecenc doesn’t always getthe sound right so you can use whatever you like to get the sound from the original video. For sound i use Virtual DUB, and SAVE TO WAV (if your source video actully uses mp3, you should just rename the extension of the outputed file to mp3 as it uses direct stream copying).

2c. Putthe Video and Audio back together and create the DVD structure. There are many programs which will allow you to do this, Ulead DVD studio works great as does Adobe Encore. you can also create menus in both. Encore requires a little more knowledge however. There are probably better programs than the two i have mentioned, so look around.

I had that same problem. what i realized is this: some disks(DVD’s) you buy will warp I did’n even hear this warp till i put the disk in my dvd rom on my laptop. so i went with a diferent brand of disks solved the issue. Also I started recodeing my dvd’s with nero recode before burning them. This recode feature is found in the Nero ultra and does have updates but i found that the updates didn’t hurt or help quality so i would say it is not necessary to update. so there you have it that is how i fixed the jerking and hanging on all my dvd’s.

is the dvd player that you are using on your computer?

avi and dvd do not get along . you need to converet the files to mpeg
